Firstwater Homestead

Our mission is to nourish lives by returning to simple, sustainable practices — creating wholesome homemade products and cultivating awareness about the food we bring to our tables.

About Firstwater Homestead

Hello and welcome! We are the Self Family—the family behind Firstwater Homestead—and we’re so grateful you’ve found your way here.

We are a family-owned homestead located in rural Indiana with a simple but meaningful mission: to encourage healthier, more intentional living for families. We share practical tips for homemade products, real food, and natural living, while raising awareness about the importance of understanding what we put in and on our bodies.

At Firstwater Homestead, we practice permaculture and regenerative farming methods to create a self-sustaining, mindful environment for our family, our animals, and the land we steward. Rather than forcing the land to produce, we work alongside natural systems that have existed long before us. This includes practices like mulching, composting, recycling materials, and rotational grazing. Each of these methods helps improve soil health, strengthen our animals, and create a thriving ecosystem that supports itself over time.

While terms like permaculture and regenerative farming might sound intimidating, the heart behind them is simple: nature already knows what it’s doing. Wild ecosystems regenerate and sustain themselves without interference. By observing, listening, and working with nature instead of against it, we’ve learned that living a healthier, more natural life doesn’t have to be complicated. It often means returning to simple, time-tested practices and eliminating harmful additives and unnecessary ingredients.

We’re still learning every day, and we’re honored to share the journey with you.
